The MEISS Project
The MEISS Project stands for “Mainstreaming Effective Intervention Strategy in Schools.” In this project, we are working with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in The Gambia to implement the Effective Intervention Strategy, as studied in the SCORE Trial, via government teachers in grades 1, 2, and 3. The SCORE Trial
The SCORE Trial was a randomized controlled trial conducted in 169 Gambian villages to evaluate a strategy to dramatically improve foundational learning in The Gambia. It was conducted between 2015 and 2018 among students in grades 1, 2, and 3. It showed that the strategy was highly effective at raising learning; after three years, children in villages randomly assigned to receive the intervention scored 3.2 standard deviations higher on early grade reading and math assessments than children in villages randomly assigned to not receive the intervention.
You can find coverage of these results, including the peer-reviewed article reporting these results published in the Journal of Development Economics, at the links below.
The ROPE project
The ROPE project was a randomized controlled trial in Guinea Bissau that used our methodology to study whether small schools, run in lieu of the government, can dramatically raise learning levels. It took place between 2014 and 2018. It showed that these schools could raise learning levels by huge amounts; at the end of the study, roughly 60 percent of children in villages randomly assigned to receive the intervention were literate and numerate; in villages randomly assigned to not receive it, zero percent of children were literate or numerate. You can read more about the intervention and the results in the links below.
